Brighter Smiles Through Teeth Whitening
Over time, our teeth naturally darken as they become stained and discoloured, both inside the tooth and on the surface. Depending on your lifestyle and what you eat, your teeth might be one of the first areas to start showing signs of aging. Some of the main factors that contribute to discolouration in teeth include:
- Foods and beverages like turmeric or coffee
- Smoking habits
- A lack of dental and oral hygiene
- Accidents or trauma
While we can't turn back time or take back that last sip of coffee, professional teeth whitening can be a safe and effective way to help whiten and brighten your smile.
Teeth Whitening to Fit Your Lifestyle
Our goal is to help you achieve a whiter, brighter smile, your way. That's why we offer at-home teeth whitening options at O'Connor Dental Centre. No matter where you are, your future smile is bright.
How Can Teeth Whitening Benefit You?
Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you. Teeth whitening treatments can help make sure it shines.
You may find that you experience an overall boost in confidence. Additionally, many of our patients find that having whiter teeth makes them feel more inclined to keep up with their oral hygiene so that they can maintain their results for longer.
What Happens During Teeth Whitening?
Our dentists use a peroxide-based gel for teeth whitening treatments. This gel breaks down stain molecules, which can result in a whiter, brighter-looking smile. The peroxide gel is non-toxic, non-allergenic, and very safe to use.
Teeth whitening is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, and not every shade of white will be a good match. Your dental professional will help you choose the right shade for your teeth.
Personalized Take-Home Teeth Whitening
We offer the option to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. If you choose the take-home whitening option, we make impressions of your mouth and create custom whitening trays.
While at home, you will apply a whitening gel to these trays and wear them according to the directions for use. By the end of treatment, you may find yourself flashing your whitened smile to everyone you meet.
FAQs About Teeth Whitening
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening at O'Connor Dental Centre.
-
How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?
While teeth whitening can make a noticeable difference, the effects are not permanent. Beverages such as coffee and wine, and certain foods, such as those that contain berries, can cause stains on your teeth.
With daily oral hygiene and being mindful of what you eat, you can help extend the appearance of your brighter smile. Many people find that they only need a touch-up about once a year.
-
Does insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a procedure not generally covered by standard dental insurance plans. Speak with your insurance provider to learn more about what is covered under your policy.
-
Does teeth whitening make teeth more sensitive?
Some people may find that their teeth or gums are mildly sensitive after teeth whitening. This should resolve itself within a few days.
To minimize any discomfort, your dentist may recommend that you use an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before treatment, and for at least two weeks following your treatment.
-
Do teeth whitening products work on all stains?
Not all stains are equal. Brown and yellow staining is most commonly lightened by teeth whitening while some other types of discolouration may not be altered at all.
If having a whiter smile is important to you but your teeth have non-responsive stains, your dentist may recommend other treatments such as dental crowns or veneers that may be a better fit for you.
-
Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?
Unfortunately, teeth whitening can only change the colour of natural teeth, and will not have any effect on the colour of dental crowns or veneers.
If you require any type of dental restoration you should speak to your dentist about having your teeth whitened beforehand.
-
Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?
Teeth whitening is a safe and comfortable procedure when done under the supervision of a qualified dentist. At-home teeth whitening should only be done after a consultation with your dentist.
If you experience any pain, sensitivity, or discomfort anywhere in your mouth, contact your dentist right away for an examination.
